There are a number of folks who have had problems with getting their ports set up correctly. I am not an expert by any means but I have been around a long time and might have some ideas. My first experience with "remote access" was with an acoustic coupler. If you don't know what that is, consider yourself lucky. Anyway, in today's world we have routers and LAN's. In order to set up your ports correctly you have to log into your router and "forward" the necessary ports for the device you are using. The selected device is identified by an IP address assigned by the router. The problem is that the router assigned the IP address and it can and will change the address at some point in the future when you reboot the PC or the router. This creates a problem because the ports are forwarded for the old IP address and not the newly assigned one. Now your port assignments are wrong again. The only way I know of the correct this is to assign a "static" IP address to the device in question. I have a Netgear router and for me the solution is to logon to the router, select Advanced/Setup/LAN and set up a reserved IP address for your device. Once you do that and reboot the device, the router will always use that address and, therefore, the ports you have set up for that device.
Like I said, I am not an expert so there is, I am sure, someone out there who can correct me and/or add to this but, if you are having problem, this might be the cause.
Hope this helps someone,
Mike

Good post. I'd also recommend www.portforward.com They have instructions for every router known.
